The Fleming Hotel, in Hong Kong’s Wan Chai district is a small (88 room) boutique hotel serving both tourist and business clients. Our brief was to provide luxury but also to make the public area seem bigger than they are (useful when you’re dealing with the intimate size of many Hong Kong buildings). The lobby walls are washed with light to be clearly visible from the road, while columns and the reception desk are lit from below. The guestrooms have internally lit display niches as well as indirect coves that delineate the space as well as bringing a sense of comfort that downlights simply don’t give.
